AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs Anthropic: Claude Fable 5.1

A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and Anthropic: Claude Fable 5.1 ($35.00 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 23 February 2026. Anthropic: Claude Fable 5.1 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 1 September 2026. Both are listed on api14 as text category models, so they sit in the same slot in your stack even though they come from different providers.

The clearest split is context and input handling. Aion-2.0 takes a 131,072 token context window and accepts text input only, producing text output. Claude Fable 5.1 takes a 1,000,000 token context window and accepts text, image and file input, with text output. So Claude Fable 5.1 is the larger context option and the one that can read images and files directly; Aion-2.0 works on text alone. Both expose reasoning controls and tool calling through their parameter lists, so neither has an exclusive edge there. Claude Fable 5.1 adds structured outputs and a few extra sampling and verbosity parameters that Aion-2.0 does not list, which matters if you want the API to enforce a schema rather than parse free text yourself.

For task routing, Aion-2.0 is the cheaper option on both input and output, so it is the natural default for high volume text work where the prompt fits comfortably inside its context window: classification, extraction from plain text, summarisation of documents you have already converted, and tool driven agents that do not need to see images. Claude Fable 5.1 is the better pick when the job needs a very long context, such as whole repositories or long transcripts in a single call, or when the input includes images or files that you would otherwise have to preprocess. If you need structured outputs enforced by the API, that also points to Claude Fable 5.1.

Calling either model through api14 uses the same OpenAI compatible interface. You send your request to the chat completions endpoint with the usual messages array, and the only thing that changes between the two is the model id: "aion-labs/aion-2.0" for AionLabs and "anthropic/claude-fable-5.1" for Anthropic. Your client code, authentication and request shape stay the same, so you can switch per request or run both side by side. Keep an eye on parameter names, since Claude Fable 5.1 lists max_completion_tokens and structured_outputs alongside the shared fields, and check that any parameter you pass is supported by the model you are targeting.

There are still cases where the cheaper model is not the right call even if cost is your main concern. If a task depends on reading a scanned page, a diagram or an attached file, Aion-2.0 cannot take that input at all, so Claude Fable 5.1 is the only workable choice among these two. Likewise, if a single prompt plus its retrieved context would exceed 131,072 tokens, you would need to chunk the work for Aion-2.0 or move the call to Claude Fable 5.1. Where neither constraint applies, start with Aion-2.0 and move up only when you hit one of those limits.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-fable-5.1" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
