AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6
A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6 ($17.50 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

In depth
AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 2026-02-04. Both are served through api14 as text category models, and both accept text as input and return text as output. The main structural difference between them is scale and surface area: Aion-2.0 is the leaner, cheaper option, while Claude Opus 4.6 is the larger, more feature rich option.
The clearest split is context and modalities. Aion-2.0 has a context window of 131072 tokens and accepts only text input. Claude Opus 4.6 has a context window of 1000000 tokens and accepts text, image and file input, so it is the one to reach for when you need to feed in a long document, a screenshot or an uploaded file alongside your prompt. On price, Aion-2.0 is the cheaper model on both input and output, so it is the lower cost choice per call. Both expose reasoning controls (include_reasoning and reasoning), so neither has a monopoly on reasoning style parameters. Where they diverge on parameters is breadth: Claude Opus 4.6 supports structured_outputs, reasoning_effort, verbosity, top_k and stop, while Aion-2.0 supports a smaller set that includes response_format, tool_choice, tools, temperature and top_p. If you need guaranteed structured output shapes, Claude Opus 4.6 is the one with the dedicated parameter for it.
For day to day work, the choice usually comes down to two questions: how much context do you need, and how much do you want to pay. If your task fits inside 131072 tokens, is text only, and you want to keep cost down, Aion-2.0 is the sensible default. That covers most chat, summarisation, extraction and tool calling workloads where the input is plain text. If your task needs a very long context, or needs to read an image or a file, or needs structured outputs, Claude Opus 4.6 is the better fit. The trade off is that you pay more per call for that extra reach, so it is worth reserving for the cases that actually need it.
Calling either model through api14 works the same way because the API is OpenAI compatible. You send your request to the same endpoint with the same request shape, and the only thing you change is the model id string. Use "aion-labs/aion-2.0" for AionLabs: Aion-2.0 and "anthropic/claude-opus-4.6" for Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6. Everything else, your messages array, your temperature, your tools, stays where it is. That makes it cheap to try one and switch to the other, or to route different requests to different models based on the task at hand.
There is still a case for the other model in each direction. If you have already built around Claude Opus 4.6 for its long context, image and file inputs, or structured outputs, there is no reason to move a working pipeline to Aion-2.0 just to save on price, unless the task is text only and fits the smaller window. Conversely, if you are on Aion-2.0 and a request arrives with an image, a file or a very long document, that request belongs on Claude Opus 4.6. The two are close enough in interface that the decision is about the request, not about the integration.
Switch with one string
Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-opus-4.6" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
