AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5

A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5 ($14.00 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 2026-09-22. Both are served through api14 as chat models in the text category, and both accept text as input and return text as output. The main structural difference is that Aion-2.0 comes from a smaller, single provider line, while Claude Opus 5.5 is part of Anthropic's Opus family.

The two differ most in context and modalities. Aion-2.0 has a context window of 131072 tokens and accepts only text input. Claude Opus 5.5 has a context window of 1000000 tokens and accepts text, image and file input. So Claude Opus 5.5 is the one to reach for when you need to feed in a long document, a large codebase, or a mix of text and images or files. Aion-2.0 is text only, so anything that involves an image or an uploaded file is out of scope for it. On structured output, Claude Opus 5.5 is the stronger of the two, since it lists structured_outputs among its supported parameters. Both support reasoning and tools, so neither has an exclusive edge there. On price, Aion-2.0 is the cheaper option for both input and output, so it costs less per token on both sides of the call.

For day to day work, the choice usually comes down to what you are sending. If your task is plain text, fits inside 131072 tokens, and you want to keep spend down, Aion-2.0 is the natural default. That covers most chat, summarisation, extraction and tool calling over short to medium inputs. If your task needs a very long context, or needs to read an image or a file, or needs structured outputs, then Claude Opus 5.5 is the one that can do the job at all, and the higher price is the cost of that capability. A reasonable pattern is to route simple text traffic to Aion-2.0 and reserve Claude Opus 5.5 for the requests that actually need the larger window or the extra input types.

Calling either model through api14 works the same way, because the API is OpenAI compatible. You point your client at the api14 base URL, send a chat completions request with your messages, and set the model field to the id you want. To use AionLabs, set the model to "aion-labs/aion-2.0". To use Anthropic, set the model to "anthropic/claude-opus-5.5". Everything else in the request body stays the same, so switching between the two is a one line change to the model id. Parameters you already pass, such as temperature, top_p, max_tokens, tools and tool_choice, are accepted by both models, so a request written for one will generally run against the other without edits. If you rely on parameters that only one side lists, such as structured_outputs or reasoning_effort on Claude Opus 5.5, keep those calls pinned to that model.

There are still cases where the more expensive model is the better pick even for text only work. If a single prompt or conversation grows past 131072 tokens, Aion-2.0 cannot hold it, and Claude Opus 5.5 can. The same applies when you need structured outputs as a first class feature rather than a workaround. In those situations the cheaper model is not a saving, it is a failed request, so pick Claude Opus 5.5 and accept the higher rate.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-opus-5.5" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
