In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 4.5 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 2025-09-29. Both are served through api14 as chat models in the text category, so either one can slot into an existing chat completions workflow without changing anything about how you structure a request.

The clearest split between them is context and modality. Claude Sonnet 4.5 accepts a context window of 1,000,000 tokens, while Aion-2.0 accepts 131,072 tokens, so Claude Sonnet 4.5 is the one to reach for when a single request has to hold a very large amount of material. Claude Sonnet 4.5 also takes text, image and file inputs, whereas Aion-2.0 takes text only. On output both return text. Both expose reasoning related parameters, so neither has a meaningful edge there. Claude Sonnet 4.5 additionally supports structured outputs, which Aion-2.0 does not list, and it offers a wider parameter surface overall (including stop, top_k and max_completion_tokens). Aion-2.0 is the cheaper of the two on both input and output, so cost is the axis where it wins.

For day to day work that is pure text and fits comfortably inside 131,072 tokens, Aion-2.0 is the natural default: it is cheaper on input and output, it supports tools, temperature, top_p, response_format and reasoning controls, and nothing about the task needs anything more. Choose Claude Sonnet 4.5 when the request involves images or files, when you need structured outputs, or when the prompt and the material it must consider together exceed what Aion-2.0 can hold. A long document review, a mixed text and image task, or a pipeline that depends on schema constrained output all point to Claude Sonnet 4.5. A high volume text classification or generation job where cost per call matters points to Aion-2.0.

Calling either model through api14 works the same way, because the API is OpenAI compatible. You send a chat completions request to the same endpoint with the same message format, the same tool definitions and the same streaming options, and you change only the model id. Use "aion-labs/aion-2.0" for AionLabs: Aion-2.0 and "anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5" for Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 4.5. That makes switching a one line change, and it also makes it easy to route per request: send the cheap text only calls to Aion-2.0 and the large context, image, file or structured output calls to Claude Sonnet 4.5, without maintaining two client integrations.

There are still cases where the more expensive model is the better pick even for plain text. If a single prompt has to carry a very large body of text, or if the answer must come back in a strict structure, Claude Sonnet 4.5 covers ground that Aion-2.0 does not, and paying more per token is the trade for that capability. Conversely, if the work is text only, fits the smaller window and does not need structured outputs, Aion-2.0 gives you the same interface at a lower price on both input and output.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
