AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5
A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5 ($7.00 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

Key differences
- AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is 60% cheaper on input tokens.
- AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is 84% cheaper on output tokens.
- Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5 reads 7.6× more context (1,000,000 tokens).
- Only Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5 supports structured JSON output.
- A request with 1,000 input and 500 output tokens costs $0.00560 with AionLabs: Aion-2.0 and $0.02 with Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5.
In depth
AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 23 February 2026. Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 30 June 2026. Both are served through api14 as chat-style models, so from a developer's point of view the main question is not what they are but which one fits the job in front of you.
The two differ most in context and in what they accept as input. Aion-2.0 has a context window of 131,072 tokens and takes text only, in and out. Claude Sonnet 5 has a context window of 1,000,000 tokens, so it holds roughly eight times as much material in a single call, and it accepts images and files alongside text, though it still returns text only. On structured output, Claude Sonnet 5 is the one with a dedicated capability, while Aion-2.0 covers the same ground through response format and tool parameters. Both expose reasoning controls, tool calling and tool choice, so neither has a clear edge there. Aion-2.0 is the cheaper of the two on both input and output, which matters if you are running high volume.
For everyday work, the choice usually follows from those facts. If your task is text in and text out, the prompt fits comfortably inside 131,072 tokens, and you care about cost per call, Aion-2.0 is the sensible default. If you need to feed in a long document, a whole repository's worth of context, screenshots, PDFs or other files, or you need strict structured outputs, Claude Sonnet 5 is the better fit because those are the things it does that Aion-2.0 does not. A mixed pipeline is reasonable too: use Claude Sonnet 5 for the ingestion and extraction step where images and files arrive, then hand the cleaned text to Aion-2.0 for the bulk generation where volume drives the bill.
Calling either model through api14 works the same way. The API is OpenAI compatible, so you point your existing client at the api14 base URL, send a chat completions request with your messages, and set the model field. The only change between the two is that string: use "aion-labs/aion-2.0" for AionLabs and "anthropic/claude-sonnet-5" for Anthropic. Your request shape, authentication and response parsing stay as they are. Parameters are largely shared, with max_tokens, temperature, top_p, tools, tool_choice, response_format and reasoning available on both, so a request written for one will generally run against the other. Claude Sonnet 5 adds a few extras such as max_completion_tokens, reasoning_effort, verbosity, stop and structured_outputs, and those will simply be ignored or rejected if you send them to Aion-2.0, so keep a small per-model parameter map if you switch often.
There are still cases where the more expensive model is the right call. Anything that arrives as an image or a file, anything that needs a context far beyond 131,072 tokens, and anything that depends on dedicated structured output support should go to Claude Sonnet 5, because Aion-2.0 cannot accept those inputs at all. Outside those cases, the cheaper model is usually enough.
Switch with one string
Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-sonnet-5" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
