In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5.5 is a text model from Anthropic, released on 2026-09-28. Both are served through api14 as chat models, and both are aimed at the same general job: taking a prompt and returning text. The difference is in how much they accept alongside that prompt and how much they can hold in view at once.

The clearest split is context and input modalities. Aion-2.0 has a context window of 131,072 tokens and accepts text only. Claude Sonnet 5.5 has a context window of 1,000,000 tokens and accepts text, images and files as input. Both return text only. So if your request includes a screenshot, a PDF or a scanned document, Claude Sonnet 5.5 is the one that can take it directly; Aion-2.0 cannot. On structured output, Claude Sonnet 5.5 is the only one of the two with that capability, which matters if you need the response to conform to a schema rather than just parse cleanly. Tool calling and reasoning support are not meaningfully different between them, so neither has an edge there. On price, Aion-2.0 is the cheaper of the two on both input and output.

For day to day work, the choice usually comes down to what you are feeding in and how much of it. If you are sending plain text prompts, running classification, extraction, summarisation or generation over text you already have, and cost per call matters, Aion-2.0 is the sensible default. It handles the same tool and reasoning parameters, so agent style loops and multi step prompts work the same way. Reach for Claude Sonnet 5.5 when the input is not text, when you need to hand over a long document or a large codebase in a single request, or when you need the model to emit output that matches a defined structure. The million token window also helps when you would otherwise be chunking and stitching results yourself.

Calling either one through api14 is the same request shape, because the API is OpenAI compatible. You point your client at the api14 base URL, send a chat completions request with your messages, and set the model field. To use Aion-2.0, set model to "aion-labs/aion-2.0". To use Claude Sonnet 5.5, set model to "anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5". Everything else in the request body stays as it is. If you already pass tools, temperature, top_p or max_tokens, those carry over; the parameters each model accepts are listed on the model pages, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 additionally takes options like reasoning_effort and verbosity. Switching between the two is a one line change, so you can route by task rather than committing to one.

There are still cases where the cheaper model is not the right pick even if you are only sending text. If a single request needs to carry a very large amount of text, more than 131,072 tokens, Aion-2.0 will not fit it and Claude Sonnet 5.5 will. The same applies if you want the model to read an image or a file that sits alongside the text, or if you want the response constrained to a structured format. In those situations the extra cost buys you a request that Aion-2.0 simply cannot serve.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
