AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3

A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 ($0.90 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

Key differences

  • DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 is 68% cheaper on input tokens.
  • DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 is 36% cheaper on output tokens.
  • DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 reads 1.3× more context (163,840 tokens).
  • Only DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 supports structured JSON output.
  • Only AionLabs: Aion-2.0 supports reasoning effort control.
  • A request with 1,000 input and 500 output tokens costs $0.00560 with AionLabs: Aion-2.0 and $0.00270 with DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3.

In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. DeepSeek: DeepSeek V3 is a text model from DeepSeek, released on 2024-12-26. Both are listed on api14 under the text category, and both take text in and return text out. Beyond that shared ground, they are built by different teams with different priorities, and the parameter lists show it.

The clearest split is reasoning versus structured output. Aion-2.0 is the one of the two that exposes reasoning controls, with include_reasoning and reasoning among its supported parameters, so it is the model to reach for when you want the model to work through a problem before answering. DeepSeek V3 does not list those, but it does support structured_outputs, which Aion-2.0 does not, along with a wider set of sampling and determinism knobs such as seed, stop, logit_bias, frequency_penalty, presence_penalty, repetition_penalty, top_k and min_p. DeepSeek V3 also has the larger context window at 163840 tokens against 131072 for Aion-2.0, so it can hold noticeably more input in a single call. Tool calling is supported by both, so that is not a deciding factor. Neither model accepts images or audio; both are text only.

For day to day work, the choice usually comes down to what the task needs. If you are doing multi step analysis, math, debugging logic or anything where an explicit reasoning pass helps, Aion-2.0 is the natural pick because reasoning is a first class parameter there. If you need strict JSON or schema conforming output, or you want to pin generation with a seed, or you are feeding long documents that push past 131072 tokens, DeepSeek V3 is the better fit. DeepSeek V3 is also the cheaper of the two on both input and output, so for high volume workloads where reasoning is not required, it is the more economical default. Aion-2.0 remains the choice when the reasoning capability is the point of the call.

Calling either model through api14 works the same way, because the API is OpenAI compatible. You point your client at the api14 base URL, send your key, and use the chat completions shape you already know. The only thing that changes between the two is the model id string: use "aion-labs/aion-2.0" for AionLabs and "deepseek/deepseek-chat" for DeepSeek V3. Everything else, the messages array, the role structure, the response parsing, stays identical, so you can swap models by changing one field or by routing on a config value. Parameters that a given model does not support should simply be omitted for that model rather than sent and ignored.

There are still cases where the other model wins. If you have standardized on structured outputs and your pipeline validates against a schema, DeepSeek V3 is the one that supports it, so Aion-2.0 is not a drop in replacement there. Conversely, if your task depends on visible reasoning steps and you want to control that behavior, DeepSeek V3 does not expose those parameters, so Aion-2.0 is the one to call. Pick based on the capability your task actually requires, not on which model is newer.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "deepseek/deepseek-chat" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.

import OpenAI from "openai";

const client = new OpenAI({

  "messages": [
    {
      "role": "user",
      "content": "Explain vector databases in two sentences."
    }
  ]
});
console.log(result.choices[0].message.content);
