AionLabs: Aion-2.0 vs Meta: Llama 3.1 70B Instruct

A side-by-side comparison of AionLabs: Aion-2.0 ($2.80 / 1M tokens) and Meta: Llama 3.1 70B Instruct ($1.40 / 1M tokens) using current USD prices and capabilities from the api14 catalog. Both run through the same OpenAI-compatible API.

In depth

AionLabs: Aion-2.0 is a text model from AionLabs, released on 2026-02-23. Meta: Llama 3.1 70B Instruct is a text model from Meta, released on 2024-07-23. Both are served through api14 as chat models in the text category, and both accept text as input and return text as output. Beyond that shared ground, they come from different lineages and different generations of tooling.

The two models have the same context window of 131072 tokens, so neither gives you an advantage on long documents, and the qualitative comparison records no meaningful difference there. The clearest split is in parameter support. Aion-2.0 exposes reasoning controls, specifically include_reasoning and reasoning, which Llama 3.1 70B Instruct does not offer. Llama 3.1 70B Instruct instead exposes structured_outputs, along with a wider set of sampling and decoding controls such as frequency_penalty, presence_penalty, repetition_penalty, logit_bias, min_p, top_k, seed and stop. Both support tools and tool_choice, so function calling is available on either side, and both support response_format, temperature, max_tokens and top_p. On price, Llama 3.1 70B Instruct is the cheaper option for both input and output, so if cost per token drives your decision, that is the one to look at first.

For tasks where you want the model to work through a problem before answering, Aion-2.0 is the natural choice because it is the only one of the two with reasoning parameters. That fits multi step analysis, debugging logic, planning and anything where an explicit intermediate reasoning pass tends to improve the final answer. For tasks where you need the output to conform to a schema, or where you want fine control over sampling behaviour and reproducibility, Llama 3.1 70B Instruct is the better fit, since it is the only one exposing structured_outputs and it also gives you seed, stop sequences and the broader penalty and truncation controls. If your workload is straightforward generation, summarisation or tool calling at volume and you do not need reasoning traces, the cheaper model covers it.

Calling either model through api14 works the same way, because the API is OpenAI compatible. You point your existing OpenAI client at the api14 base URL, send your request to the chat completions endpoint, and set the model field to the id you want. The only change between the two is that string: use aion-labs/aion-2.0 for Aion-2.0, or meta-llama/llama-3.1-70b-instruct for Llama 3.1 70B Instruct. Your messages array, your tool definitions and your response handling stay as they are, so you can switch models per request or run both side by side without rewriting your integration. Just keep in mind that parameters are not interchangeable: sending reasoning to the Llama model, or structured_outputs to Aion-2.0, is not supported.

There are still cases where the more expensive model is not the right pick even if you like its feature set. If your application depends on structured outputs or on reproducible sampling via seed, Aion-2.0 cannot substitute for Llama 3.1 70B Instruct, regardless of the reasoning controls it adds. Likewise, if you are running high volume generation where per token cost matters and reasoning is not required, the cheaper model remains the sensible default.

Switch with one string

Both models use the same endpoint and request shape. Change the model value from "aion-labs/aion-2.0" to "meta-llama/llama-3.1-70b-instruct" and prompts, streaming and tools keep working.
