About BAAI: bge-m3
BAAI: bge-m3 is an embedding model from BAAI, the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. It belongs to the embeddings category, which means it is built to turn text into vectors rather than to generate chat responses. If your application needs a model that answers questions or writes text, this is not that kind of model; it exists to represent text numerically so that other systems can compare, search and retrieve it.
The model takes text as its only input and produces embeddings as its only output. According to the provider, it encodes sentences, paragraphs and long documents into a 1024-dimensional dense vector space, with the aim of delivering high-quality semantic embeddings. It is optimized for multilingual retrieval, semantic search and large-context applications. The context window is 8194 tokens, and the maximum output is 7374, so fairly long passages of text can be encoded in a single request rather than being split into many small fragments.
Those capabilities point to a clear set of practical uses. Semantic search is the most direct one: encode your documents once, encode the user query at request time, and rank documents by vector similarity instead of keyword overlap. Retrieval augmented generation is another, where bge-m3 supplies the retrieval half by finding passages that are semantically close to a question, which are then passed to a separate generative model. Because the model is multilingual, the same index can serve queries and documents in different languages, which suits cross-lingual search, deduplication and clustering of text collections. The long context window also helps when a single document chunk is large, since fewer chunks mean less fragmentation of meaning across vectors.
You call the model through api14's OpenAI-compatible API using the model id "baai/bge-m3". Because the interface follows the OpenAI format, you can point an existing OpenAI client at api14's base URL and send your text to the embeddings endpoint with that id, without rewriting your integration. The model lists no supported parameters beyond what the endpoint requires, so keep requests simple: supply the input text and the model id, and read the returned vectors. There are no sampling controls such as temperature to tune here, since the output is deterministic embedding data rather than generated tokens.
One thing to keep in mind is scope. bge-m3 only accepts text and only returns embeddings, so tasks like summarization, classification by generation or conversational replies need a different model alongside it. The 8194 token context is generous for retrieval work but still finite, so very large documents should be chunked before encoding. Within those bounds, it is a reasonable choice when your problem is fundamentally about representing and comparing text.
